INSPIRATION & DECOR

Why “Next Door”?

We decided on the name Next Door because we feel it evokes a neighborhood feeling that is what we were trying to create with our restaurant. We also own the Front Street Deli which is two doors down so it works!

What was your inspiration for the restaurant?

With regard to our food, we are serving unique and approachable items that take comfort food to the next level. We want to please the whole family from the kids to the most discerning “foodie”. Executive chef, Jeff Strom has taken this vision and created something that no other restaurant in the area is doing. Our décor is warm and inviting with an urban flair. We have utilized reclaimed barn wood, custom art pieces, live plants, lighting and interior touches to create an “urban barn” that is contemporary and understated. In addition, it is true to our mission of using sustainable practices.

Where did the barn wood and barn door come from?

The barn wood for the ceiling came from the Boardwalk Restaurant, a mainstay in Lake George for more than thirty years, before that it was from a hay barn in the Brant lake area. The barn door and barn wood siding on the walls came from a barn on Middleline Rd in Ballston Spa that dates back to the early 1800s. That land was founded by one of the founding fathers of Ballston Spa, Hezekiah Middlebrook.

Who did all the glasswork?

Ryan Cannon, a Ballston Spa native, was born in Saratoga in 1977. He works on a lathe with borosilicate glass to make functional products. He first learned the art of glassblowing while living in Vancouver, BC in 1997. Since then, he has created numerous types of vessels and functional art sold both locally and nationwide. He also specializes in flame work on a bench and has incorporated cold-working techniques of spray paint, sandblast and electroforming to create various multi-media art pieces. He is the owner/operator of Manifest Glassworks, LLC, a glass production shop in Upstate New York, where he lives with his family.

Who did all your copper work?

Copper was done by local artist and Ballston Spa native Brian Curran.

Are the plants above the entry way real?

They sure are! That is our “live shelf” that was created and is maintained by Saratoga Organics using primarily native species to this area.

Who painted the oil paintings?

Zack Lobdell, a Saratoga native. You can view his work at www.zacklobdell.com
